A roundup of GLTB symphony orchestras

Raise your hand if you can name a GLTB community orchestra. (And it doesn’t count if you or your spouse is a member of one!)

Sure, there’s lots of gay choruses. Here in little Albany, New York we’ve actually go two. And GLTB marching bands usually show up out of the woodwork when it’s time for a parade. But gay orchestras??

Well, I can find ten.  They’re located in five countries, with two launched in just the past year, and three with word “rainbow” in their name.  Here’s the run-down:

  1. The Queer UrbanOrchestra of New York…Est. 2009.

We also need to do a roundup of GLBT Arts Festivals. I am Exec. Director of the International GLBT Arts Festival, est. 2009. Always looking to invite and connect with GLBT Performing groups.

  2. There’s a list compiled by Michel F. Paré, Toronto gay archivist, activist at the bottom of

Hey! What a thrill to be listed here among our sister orchestras. Though, just to update our info:

    Artistic Director: Seth Bedford

  4. Ken Murphy says:

I am the sole founder of the Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra (“APO”) in 2004. I was the APO’s President for the first three years of its existence. I relocated to Atlanta from Minneapolis in 2003, after having been a founding member (not the founder) of the Minnesota Philharmonic Orchestra, having played with them for 11 years. In 2007, the other APO Board members and I had unreconcilable differences about the future of the APO. They insisted that our audience approach be aligned with that of the professional Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, while I wanted the APO to be engaged towards the local LGBT community, which was my whole motivation in founding the group.
I resigned, however, I will always be the Founder of the APO. If it were not for me, the APO would not exist, something which the current APO Board members refuse to acknowledge, inexplicably. I have great fondness for the Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra, and I wish them success. Ken Murphy, Atlanta, GA.
